How to trade in your old iPhone for iPhone 18 Pro: the complete process

Pick the channel first, then the process

Trade-in is not one path. Pick the wrong channel and every later deadline, payout, and markdown rule changes.

One-line pick: one phone, clean paperwork—go official Apple; you were renewing the carrier anyway—put both estimates next to the lock-in cost; the old phone is nearly new and the official quote looks ugly—ask two recyclers before you order.

What you can get: US official credits

Apple only promises a range in public: toward iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 13 and newer credit up to $175–$885. The model-by-model list lives in the US store checkout questionnaire, not as a keynote appendix. The table below is copied from mid-September 2026 “Up to” figures on apple.com/shop/buy-iphone/iphone-18-pro—all of them ceilings for a phone that works and looks intact.

US checkout-page maximums

On launch day, old-iPhone credits dropped across the board: 16 Pro from about 630 to 510, 16 Pro Max from about 720 to 610. That is a generation-week ritual, not your phone suddenly dying. Most 17 Pro / Pro Max owners still should not swap on launch night—a year of residual value is about $785–$885, and what you buy is a variable aperture and a vapor chamber, not a new category. The table starts to look like a “reason to switch” only on 15 and older.

How to read China, Hong Kong, and Japan

The mainland China store page does not hang a public model table that matches the US one. A third-party partner runs the trade-in; the questionnaire is a pre-estimate; the real amount waits on inspection after they receive the phone. Hong Kong and Japan likewise follow the local store page or an in-store assessment—do not multiply the dollar table by an exchange rate and call it a China payout.

• Mainland 18 Pro 256GB is still 9999 yuan. Finish the questionnaire at apple.com.cn/shop/trade-in, look at “9999 − pre-estimate” as out-of-pocket, then compare recyclers.
• Hong Kong starts at HK$10,499, Japan at 219,800 yen including tax; subsidies and tax rates will twist “looks cheaper.” The logic matches the four-market buying advice: where you live and where the warranty sits come before the credit.
• Mainland China also has Yearly Upgrade: a qualifying new phone + eligible AppleCare+, then from month 3 through month 15 after purchase you can credit at least 50% of the original purchase price. That solves “switch again next year,” not this first Sept 18 offset.

The full process

All three paths share one rule: the estimate is a questionnaire; the deal is an inspection; until the new phone is in your hand, the old one is still your daily driver.

Add trade-in on the online order

1. Pick 18 Pro color, storage, and purchase region. 256GB is still the right answer for most people; the 1TB / 2TB math is in the previous piece—do not let trade-in comfort talk you into a top SKU.
2. Add the trade-in device on the checkout page. Pick the exact model and storage (Settings → General → About). Check condition as “what the inspector will see tomorrow,” not “I still think it looks fine.”
3. See when the credit actually lands. The US store usually applies it on this order; mainland China charges the new phone first, then refunds via the original method (sometimes a bank transfer) after the old phone arrives and is verified. Do not assume both sides “pay $885 less on the spot.”
4. Write down the Quote ID / order number. The return box, the waybill, and support all key off that number.
5. Wait for the new phone. It goes on sale Sept 18 in more than 65 markets. Do not sign out of iCloud or erase before it arrives—the codes still live on the old phone.
6. Finish migrating, then deal with the old phone. Quick Start or iCloud both work. Sign into banks, WeCom, games, and hardware keys once, then open the hand-in checklist.
7. Pack and ship with the kit. Apple or the partner mails packaging and a label. One phone per box; do not pack a case, cable, charger, or screen protector—they will not be returned. Match the waybill Quote ID to the email, and keep the courier receipt.

In-store trade-in

In-store is “they see the phone now, they change the price now.” It fits a disputed condition, or anyone who does not want to mail their only phone for a couple of weeks.

• Book Apple Store trade-in / Trade In. Weekend slots at popular stores are hard; weekday mornings are safer.
• Bring the old phone, charged enough to power on, and a government-issued photo ID (a hard requirement for in-store trade-in in mainland China).
• On-site inspection takes about ten-plus minutes. Screen scratches, back-glass dings, a hazy camera, or a phone that will not inspect will change the number on the spot.
• Online and in-store estimates can differ. Apple China says so in writing: if the description does not match the device, the in-store amount may not match the online assessment.
• Confirm the amount, then buy the new phone. Credit applies on the spot—no “ship first, wait later.”

Mainland China specifics

The usual online mainland path: official estimate → check trade-in at order → receive the return kit → erase, then the designated courier picks up → inspection → original payment method or bank credit. You must be 18 or older. VAT is sometimes calculated on the full new-phone sale price—the footnote already says so; do not read “trade-in” as a tax-law price cut.

Checklist before you hand the phone over

The support article’s order collapses into one table. Miss a row and you get a markdown at best, a failed ticket at worst.

Android old phones likewise need a signed-out account before a factory reset. Leave Google / OEM accounts on and trade-in eligibility can fail—Apple’s support article says so.

Answers that cut the quote

The questionnaire usually turns on: does it power on, is the screen intact, is the housing badly dented or cracked, does the camera work, do buttons and biometrics work, can Find My be turned off. These are the ones that most often knock “maximum” down to recycler grade.

• Cracked screen, liquid leak, or dead touch—a film does not hide it; inspection looks at glass and the display
• Clearly bent back or mid-frame, or a chip out of it—light wear can still take the top tier; chips and warps cannot
• Cannot turn off Find My / cannot erase—you have not proved ownership
• Blurry camera, liquid ingress, Face ID that will not enroll—a function item fails
• A very weak battery rarely vetoes on its own, but swell and a warped case get cut with the cosmetic items
• Wrong model or storage—checking 16 Pro as 16, or 256GB as 128GB, will change after inspection

Honest checks cost less than betting the inspector “will not notice.” After a markdown, mainland China can refuse and send the old phone back; the US commonly bills the difference. Either side, a gambled maximum is not your money.

Official vs carrier vs third party

Compare on the same ruler: divide the carrier’s “up to $1000” by 36, then multiply by the months you will actually keep the contract. People who only read the banner think official $510 looks terrible; add the early-termination fee and the conclusion often flips.

Four markets: SIM, warranty, payment

Trade-in rules follow where you buy, not where your ID was issued. Buy a US unit, carry it back to the mainland as a daily driver, and the credit feels easy that day—warranty and the SIM tray are the later bill.

• United States: credit at checkout; old phone ships later. 18 Pro is eSIM-only. Carrier upgrades and IUP / Apple Upgrade are a separate eligibility check—do not mash them into ordinary Trade In.
• Mainland China: partner recycling, 14-day window, photo ID in-store. China-market 18 Pro keeps a physical SIM. The purchase cap is still 2 Pro + 2 Pro Max per customer.
• Hong Kong: physical SIM, international warranty is kinder to travel; trade-in follows the Hong Kong store page—do not use mainland questionnaire numbers.
• Japan: eSIM-only, high sticker, carrier monthly plans can pull total cost of ownership down. Data after you enter China is a separate plan.

Developers count separately: one 256GB 18 Pro is enough for device work; put compiles and overnight regression on a Cloud Mac. Do not chain 2TB and the old-phone credit on the same card because “the lab also needs the top SKU.”

Timeline from pre-order to hand-in

• Already passed: Sept 12 pre-order (5:00 a.m. Pacific / 20:00 mainland)—you could add the trade-in to the order then and keep using the old phone
• Sept 14: iOS 27 public release. The old phone can upgrade first so Quick Start shares one OS with the new one; how to read drain and heat is in the official upgrade field test
• Sept 18: launch-day delivery. Do one thing that day: move life onto the new phone
• Within 24 hours of arrival: confirm payments, SMS, and work accounts; then back up the old phone again

• 3–5 business days after ship (common in mainland China): inspection-result email; that is the letter where you accept a markdown or send it back

Apple does not publish one hard “must arrive in N days” number for US online trade-in, but wait too long and both the order and the estimate can be cancelled. When the kit is there, ship it—do not wait for “next week is easier.”

FAQ

Do I have to hand in the old phone the day I order?

No. The credit can sit on the 18 Pro order first; ship the old phone after the new one arrives and the data is migrated. From Sept 12 through Sept 18, the old phone is still the only telephone.

How much does a 17 Pro Max actually save toward 18 Pro?

US ceiling $885 against $1199 is about $314 before tax. Whether that is worth it is a separate question: last week’s conclusion still holds—most 17-series owners should not swap on launch night. If you do, use the live checkout number, not August’s 720 / 630.

What happens when I turn off Find My? Can I do it early?

After Find My is off and the phone is erased, that old unit is no longer your activated device. Wait until the new phone works and can receive codes, then turn it off. Doing it early is locking yourself out.

If the inspection changes the price, can I back out?

Mainland China: yes—accept the new amount, or refuse and take the old phone back. The US follows the order email; the common outcomes are a balance due or cancelling that trade-in. So check the questionnaire against the physical phone.

The carrier says $1000—why still look at official?

Divide 1000 by 36 months, then ask whether you will change plans early. Official $510 comes off the phone price once; carrier $1000 is often “the total you only see if you finish the contract.”

Can I trade in an Android phone for 18 Pro?

Yes. The US store page lists Galaxy, Pixel, OnePlus, and other ceilings, high tier around $290—far below 17 Pro Max. The process is the same: back up, sign out, factory reset. The mainland questionnaire has Android options too; use the local page for the number.

I bought Yearly Upgrade last year—which path do I take?

Take the Yearly Upgrade window, not the ordinary Trade In questionnaire. Eligibility is a qualifying new phone + eligible AppleCare+, the window is months 3–15 after purchase, and the credit is at least 50% of the original purchase price. Do not mash both rules on the same checkout page.

Should developers keep an old phone for compatibility?

Yes. 18 Pro covers the slab flagship; iOS 27 still has to run on 15 / 16 users. Before you trade the old one in, ask whether the test matrix still needs that unit. Keep compiles on a Cloud Mac; do not spend the trade-in savings stacking Xcode on your own laptop.
