iOS 27 already went out on Monday, September 14, 2026 as a free OTA. We covered the ship time, supported devices, and Siri AI tiers in the September 11 piece: about 10:00 a.m. Pacific, which is roughly 1:00 a.m. on September 15 in Beijing. The calendar is now the day after public release, and the comment threads have collapsed into four fights: battery drain, heat, smoothness, and endurance.

This is a Dev Journal look from day one through 48 hours, not a hundred-phone lab report. The numbers answer “should you panic, should you restore,” not a percentage duel with Apple’s keynote. Being able to install the OS, turn on Apple Intelligence, and hit the on-device voice ceiling is still three layers—when you judge heat and drain, first confirm which layer you are on.

How we tested: phones, scenes, and what we skipped

The four phones map to the three compatibility tiers we already wrote last week:

Scenes stayed close to daily use, not a benchmark loop: a stretch of Wi‑Fi and a stretch of cellular; WeChat / Messages, Safari, Camera, Maps, short video; one night locked and charging, one night locked and not. Brightness followed whatever we would normally use. Low Power Mode stayed off, so we did not rewrite the variables mid-test.

This is not a lab scorecard
  • The sample is small; battery health, photo-library size, and iCloud sync volume will bend the curve
  • Percentages are an observed range versus the same phone, same scenes, on iOS 26 before the upgrade—not Apple’s official numbers
  • OTA peak traffic, the carrier, and case thickness all change how “hot” a phone feels in the hand

Battery drain: why day one looks ugly

A worse first day after a major release is almost an annual plot point. iOS 27 adds another layer: search rebuild plus on-device model prep. In Settings you feel it as System Services, Photos, and Siri & Dictation jumping to the top of Battery; the lock-screen stand-in for a fan (there is no fan) is a warm back.

What the four phones shared: the first 6–12 hours after the upgrade finishes are the busiest in the background. The 13 mostly did Spotlight and Photos analysis; 15 Pro / 16 Pro / 17 Pro, in regions where the features are available, also spent time on Foundation Models / Private Cloud Compute prep. China-market units, per public guidance, do not get next-gen Siri AI, so their background curve looks more like a “classic major release”—still elevated from indexing.

Overnight standby

Upgrade night: plug in and finish the install. Next day: use it. Next night: lock the screen for 8 hours unplugged, versus the same habit before the upgrade:

There is only one way to read this: an ugly first night does not mean the public release is “destined to drain more”. The 15 Pro class is the one that usually catches the most blame: it just crossed the AI threshold, so the background has more to do than a 13, and the chip is not as generous as a 17 Pro.

What to watch in Battery usage

Open Settings → Battery and split Screen On from Background Activity. Day-one items that commonly jump:

  • System Services / Home Screen & App Library: indexing, widget refresh, icon and Spotlight rebuild
  • Photos: faces, scenes, next-gen search, and (on compatible phones) composition-tool warmup
  • Siri & Dictation: only worth worrying about where Apple Intelligence is actually available; China-market units at launch usually do not suddenly take first place
  • Third-party apps: many are adapting to Liquid Glass and iOS 27 APIs, so day-one wake-ups get busier

If one social or short-video app eats most of the daytime battery by itself, update that app before you call the OS broken. System indexing usually slides off the top of the list in two to three days; a single app that stays on the throne is the signal to reinstall or turn off Background App Refresh.

Heat: what counts as normal

Heat and drain are two ways of feeling the same work. OTA unpack, verify, migrate—the chassis gets a heat cycle; after reboot, indexing starts another. On the four phones:

  • During the upgrade: all four backs ran clearly warm; the 17 Pro finished faster, and the heat peak was not higher
  • The next 6–12 hours: 15 Pro / 16 Pro were the easiest to call “hot to the touch” when charging and indexing ran together
  • Day-two daily use: navigation, 4K camera, and short video still warm the phone—that is not a new iOS 27 plot versus iOS 26; lock-screen standby should not stay scorching

A warm back is common during the indexing window. Stay scorching or shut down on its own, then consider a restore or repair.
When you should not keep waiting
  • Locked, unused, and not charging, yet the back stays hot for a long stretch
  • Overheating warnings, unexpected shutdowns, or charging that drops mid-session
  • Battery Health jumping oddly in a single day (first rule out a brand-new phone / a just-finished calibration)

Cases, MagSafe stands, and playing while charging all amplify the “this is burning” feeling. Take the case off once when you judge heat—you will misread fewer phones.

Smoothness and Liquid Glass

Apple shipped Liquid Glass in the public release, and Settings gained a transparency slider. The look is more see-through; the cost is heavier compositing. What the phones felt like:

  • iPhone 16 Pro / 17 Pro: Home Screen, Control Center, and app switching stay mostly clean; launch and Photos loading keep up with the marketing in the hand
  • iPhone 15 Pro: daily scrolling is fine; yanking Notification Center open in one motion can hesitate for a frame
  • iPhone 13: Control Center, Notification Center, and some system sheets show dropped frames; after lowering transparency, the hitching tightened up a lot

Older phones are still worth upgrading for search, scheduling, and security patches; do not expect “iOS 27 will feel snappier than iOS 26” just because you installed it. If you mainly use an 11–13, back up first, then slide Liquid Glass toward More Tinted before you grade smoothness.

Third-party apps are a second line. Unadapted nav bars and blur layers feel dull in week one. That is not a dying battery—developers are still racing the iOS 27 SDK. If the compile seat is jammed on your own laptop, adaptation only gets slower; more on that below.

Endurance: will screen-on time shrink?

Split “drain” from “endurance”: the first is background work stealing charge; the second is how long you can actually swipe. On the four phones, at similar brightness and a similar app mix, day-one screen-on time was generally a notch shorter than iOS 26. By day three:

The conclusion can be written in ink: the public release did not hand over an across-the-board endurance leap on day one; it also did not collapse the line on these phones. What actually spreads the results is whether you treat the indexing window as the final score, and whether the phone sits near the AI threshold.

Region and device tiers: do not borrow someone else’s complaint

Last week’s piece already stressed: can install iOS 27 ≠ can use Siri AI ≠ can use every new on-device capability. Battery complaints need the same ruler:

  • Mainland China / EU iPhones: no next-generation Apple Intelligence / Siri AI at launch. Your day-one curve looks more like “classic major-release indexing.” Do not compare it to an overseas 15 Pro’s Siri background usage
  • iPhone 11–14, and non-Pro 15: no resident on-device large model; heat is mostly indexing and Liquid Glass
  • 15 Pro / 16 and newer (where available): extra model and personal-context prep, so day one runs hotter and hungrier—that is the cost of the tier, not a permanent state
  • 17 Pro / Air / new flagships: indexing finishes faster, so heat “feels shorter.” That is not the same as never getting warm

Language toggles work the same way: Simplified Chinese in the system language list does not mean Siri AI is live. Trust Settings → Siri and the regional support page, not a forum screenshot convicting your battery.

If it looks bad, do these first

  1. Wait another 48 hours, and preferably a full three days of battery graphs. Day one almost always looks ugly.
  2. Sleep one night on Wi‑Fi + plugged in so indexing and iCloud can finish. That beats force-restarting on a loop.
  3. In Settings → Accessibility / Display, lower Liquid Glass transparency (older phones first).
  4. Update the third-party apps at the top of Battery; turn off Background App Refresh you do not need.
  5. If Beta Updates is still on, leave the test channel so you do not stay stuck on leftover RC bits.
  6. After 48 hours, if heat or drain is still abnormal: back up → Restore iPhone; if that fails, go to hardware diagnostics.

If you skipped a backup before upgrading, an iCloud or computer backup now is still in time—restore is the later move, not a day-one ritual.

Developers: do not treat day one as a baseline

The iOS 27 SDK, Liquid Glass, and Siri / App Intents will all pile into Xcode 27. The easy mistake in the public-release window is treating a phone’s charge during indexing as a failed regression.

  • Battery baseline: wait until System Services slides off the top of Settings → Battery, then collect Instruments / MetricKit
  • Device matrix: at least one 15 Pro or 16+ for the AI path; keep a 13 or 11 for “can install the OS, no AI”
  • Regional cases: write mainland China / EU builds as “feature off.” Do not assume a global Siri AI entry point
  • Compiles and Simulator: put them on a Cloud Mac so local disk, overnight builds, and phone charging are not fighting for the same desk

We just broke down what a month of compile seats costs: Xcode 27 / iOS 27 monthly cost. Endurance testing on real phones is capex; Cloud Mac is how you move Xcode and DerivedData off the desk.

FAQ

Does the upgrade always drain more?

From day one through 48 hours, every phone in the set drained more. After indexing, 16 Pro / 17 Pro sat near pre-upgrade; 13 and 15 Pro can stay slightly higher, depending on photo-library size and whether AI is on.

A warm back—should I take it in?

Half a day of heat after the upgrade is common. If it stays hot while locked and unused, shows an overheating warning, or shuts down, then restore or take it in.

Should iPhone 11 / 12 / 13 still upgrade?

Yes they can; you get security and system-level improvements, not Siri AI. Lower the smoothness bar, drop transparency, then judge. Back up a daily driver first.

Will China-market units drain more because of AI?

Per Apple, mainland China does not get next-generation Apple Intelligence / Siri AI at launch. Do not judge a China-market endurance curve from an overseas 15 Pro Siri background screenshot.

How long before I decide?

At least 48 hours, preferably three days. The first day’s Battery page is almost worthless as evidence.

Will Low Power Mode hide the problem?

It can get you through a travel day, and it will also postpone indexing. If you want to know what the public release actually feels like, turn Low Power Mode off, let the background finish, then compare.

Can I measure app drain on day one?

You can collect, but you cannot treat it as a baseline. System indexing pollutes the data. Wait for the graphs to settle, then compare with iOS 26.

How do I roll back to iOS 26?

Apple usually allows unsigned-firmware downgrades only in a short window. After the public release lands, treat the upgrade as one-way. If you care about stability, take a full backup before you upgrade—do not count on a one-tap undo the next day.

Three lines: drain and heat the day after public release are usually indexing, not a battery that suddenly died. Smoothness splits by phone—new phones stay clean; older phones, fade the glass before you grade them. Endurance needs day three: these phones did not leap across the board, and they did not collapse; the 15 Pro class is the easiest to dunk on on day one, and the easiest to exonerate after 48 hours.

Region switches, the AI threshold, and photo-library size decide your curve more than “someone on a forum lost 20%.” For a ship calendar, put the device matrix and a Cloud Mac compile box on the same week—it beats staring at the day-one progress bar and the Battery page.

Phones are indexing—do not jam compiles onto your own laptop

In the iOS 27 public-release window, real phones need 48 hours for system services. Put Xcode 27, Simulator, and DerivedData on a Cloud Mac so the battery baseline comes out clean.
