After Surprise and Shine on September 9, the price tile was louder than the chip. Apple Newsroom pinned the US starting prices at $1,199 / $1,299. Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Japan followed the same night. Before the event we wrote what was already locked. Today the question is two plain sentences: how much more, and should you still buy; where you live, and where you should buy.

The verdict first: is it worth buying
One line: the Pro upgrade this year is real. The pain is not the $100 / RMB 1,000 on 256GB. It is 1TB and the new 2TB.

Developers are a separate case: one 256GB unit covers device QA. Compiles and overnight regression go on a Cloud Mac. Do not write a 2TB invoice into the device lab.
Official prices in four markets
Put the four 256GB starting prices on one table first. Hong Kong and Japan stay in local currency—do not convert them into “looks cheaper” first. Tax, trade-in, and carrier credits will twist the answer.

United States
Newsroom only pinned the starting price. MacRumors’ store-page comparison makes the high capacities clear—256GB is only $100 more; 1TB is $300 more.

Pro Max: 256GB $1,299 (was $1,199); 1TB $1,899 (was $1,599); 2TB $2,499 (last year’s Max 2TB was about $1,999, so $500 more). 512GB follows the usual $200 step; trust the store page.
The US still has two levers that thin the sticker: instant trade-in credit of about $175–$885 (iPhone 13 and newer), and carrier credits up to about $1,200 (iPhone 14 and newer, terms extra). Klarna’s Apple Upgrade 24-month plan can land near $34.99 / month. eSIM only. Battery numbers are sold on the “larger battery” SKU.
Mainland China
Apple China’s published prices match the capacity table IT Home compiled. Against iPhone 17 Pro at 8,999 / 10,999 / 12,999, the start is RMB 1,000 more, and high capacity is steeper.

Mainland pre-order is 20:00 on September 12, on sale the 18th, two Pro plus two Pro Max per customer. Physical SIM stays. Apple Reference Image is unavailable in mainland China at launch for regulatory reasons. Whether Apple Intelligence / Siri AI is fully open to China accounts and China hardware follows the support page after iOS 27 (September 14). Mid-2026, Apple’s China store still said mainland units were not supported. Do not assume “the system language has Chinese” means full China-SKU features.
Hong Kong
Apple Hong Kong and local coverage (Unwire and others) put starting prices at Pro HK$10,499 and Pro Max HK$11,499, 256GB to start, 2TB at the top. Higher HKD steps follow apple.com/hk checkout. This piece does not invent the middle tiers.
Hong Kong still has a physical SIM. International warranty and dual-SIM habits are kinder for travel. Versus mainland, do not just line up HK$10,499 against RMB 9,999—activation country, iCloud region, and service locations still count. Hong Kong battery numbers follow the SIM-tray SKU. Do not paste the US 36 / 45-hour video-playback line onto it.
Japan
Japan’s tax-included store page already spreads every capacity (Impress Watch and others line up):

Against last year’s common Pro 256GB sticker of about ¥179,800, this year’s start is roughly ¥40,000 more. Japan, like the US, is eSIM only, and rated battery follows the “larger battery” line. Carrier deals (docomo / au / SoftBank / Rakuten) can look better than the Apple sticker; run the conditions yourself. Pre-order opens at 21:00 on the 12th.
How to read the hike—don’t stop at the starting price
Apple wrote “only $100 more” into the launch story because 256GB is the easy slide. The invoice is uglier on NAND: US 1TB jumps $300 in one step; China 1TB jumps about RMB 2,500. 2TB is new on Pro—US $2,399, China RMB 20,499, Japan ¥429,800. That is the price of archiving 4K / ProRes, not “one more tier for peace of mind.”
At a mid-market rate, US $1,199 is a bit over RMB 8,000—still clearly under the China 9,999 start. Hong Kong HK$10,499 converted to RMB sometimes lands near, or under, the China start. That does not automatically mean “buy in the US or Hong Kong and you win.” Duty, warranty, SIM tray, account region, and activation policy will eat the spread. Treat FX as a cross-check. Treat the store page as the price tile.

Standard iPhone 18 / 18e did not share the stage. Outside expectation is spring 2027. If you want a new iPhone that is not a Pro, there is no new SKU to wait for—only 17-series discounts.
Software window: iOS 27 ships September 14. Siri AI arrives with iOS 27 as a beta, English first; French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish follow around October. Siri AI on iOS is unavailable in the EU at launch. Developers will hit new camera-aperture APIs and a Reference Image API—when hardware quotas are tight, Simulator seats and regression devices matter more than a top-config phone per person.

Three easy ways to get this wrong:
- Don’t buy a US unit as a daily driver in mainland China just to save money—no physical SIM, and you own carrier eSIM setup plus how banks and some apps treat non-China hardware
- Hong Kong is not an automatic win—subtract travel, activation, and service; if you live on the mainland, a dead unit still needs a shop that will service that serial
- Japan stickers are the highest; subsidies can be the sweetest—only if you live in Japan and can use a carrier plan; converting ¥219,800 off the Apple page is not cheap
Buying advice by who you are
Daily upgrades
- In the US: Apple.com plus trade-in or carrier credit first. If 256GB is enough, leave 1TB alone. eSIM-only is already normal.
- In mainland China: you want a physical SIM and domestic service, buy the China SKU. Order 256GB if RMB 9,999 is acceptable; look at 512GB if 4K video piles up and you never delete. Ask whether 1TB / 2TB is actually a local film library before you pay for it.
- In Hong Kong or crossing the border often: Hong Kong tray plus international warranty is smoother. Versus mainland, run FX and service locations together.
- In Japan: read docomo / au / SoftBank / Rakuten monthly plans before the Apple sticker. eSIM only; have a data plan ready before you enter China.
Photo and pro users
Variable aperture and Pro Controls are the sturdiest reason to pay more this year. If you need shallow depth of field and a sharp back row in a group shot, this main camera can open and close in hardware for the first time—not just in computational photography. Apple Reference Image matters for news and evidence—if you work in mainland China, treat it as not here yet. 2TB is only for people who keep a lot of ProRes / 4K 60 on the phone.
Developers and QA
iOS 27, aperture APIs, and a second layout family for the foldable will crowd local Xcode. One 256GB 18 Pro as hardware is enough to cover the slab Pro; foldable samples are a separate kit. Compiles, Simulator, and overnight regression go on a Cloud Mac—cheaper than a top config for everyone. The chip and vapor chamber help if the phone is an on-device inference node. Team compute still should not live on a phone.
Pre-order, launch, and which capacity
- Pre-order: September 12 (5:00 a.m. PT / 20:00 mainland / 21:00 Japan)
- Arrival: September 18; some markets September 25
- Software: iOS 27 and Apple Intelligence, September 14
- 256GB: the right answer for most people, and the smallest hike
- 512GB: you shoot a lot and hate clearing the library; usually better value than jumping to 1TB
- 1TB / 2TB: decide by whether the phone is actually the film library, not by “flagship means maxed out”

Is the official US price capped at $1,199?
That’s 256GB. 512GB is about $1,399, 1TB about $1,799, 2TB about $2,399. State tax, shipping, and carrier plans are extra.
Is the China Pro the most expensive Pro ever?
Starting price is RMB 9,999—RMB 1,000 above the 17 Pro’s 8,999. Top 2TB hits 20,499. The high-capacity hike is about 19%, sharper than the start.
Hong Kong at 10,499, Japan at ¥219,800—which is the better deal?
There is no universal answer. Hong Kong has a physical SIM and international warranty; Japan is eSIM only, sticker high, carrier subsidies possible. Follow where you live and where you can get service.
Can a US or Japan unit be a daily phone in mainland China?
Getting online is not the same as being easy. eSIM only, warranty country, and some apps and payments care about hardware origin. For a mainland daily driver, prefer the China SKU or a Hong Kong unit you can actually get repaired.
I have a 17 Pro. Should I buy on launch night?
Most people should not. Unless you clearly need variable aperture, stronger sustained performance, or 2TB. Waiting a month or two for trade-in and channel pricing is usually more comfortable than ordering on announce night.
Does the China SKU get Siri AI?
Newsroom says Apple Intelligence supports Simplified Chinese. Siri AI starts as an English beta. Whether China hardware and China accounts get the full stack follows Apple China’s support page and the September 14 system update. Do not invent features from the language list.
How do I choose versus the foldable iPhone?

Is the lowest storage enough for developers?
Yes. 256GB is enough to run iOS 27 and the new APIs. What you are short of is a stable compile box, not phone NAND.

Which market’s unit you buy: SIM tray, warranty, and where you actually live first—then the FX table.
Trade-in and carriers will still rewrite the tile. Before pre-order opens, pick capacity and purchase country. That beats refreshing another “it went up again” clip.
New iPhone to test—don’t bottleneck compiles on your laptop
