One day to Surprise and Shine. Three days ago we compressed what is confirmed for iPhone 18 Pro before the keynote into one table. Today the camera turns to the device most likely to steal the headline—Apple’s first foldable iPhone.
What follows is assembled from the MacRumors pre-event roundup, Bloomberg / Mark Gurman, TrendForce, and Tom’s Guide, as of September 8, 2026. Any number that has not appeared in an Apple press release or the invite is treated as rumor.

The name: Ultra or Fold
English-language press has almost uniformly written iPhone Ultra this week, and Chinese coverage followed. Another thread still says iPhone Fold. Neither is an official Apple SKU.
If Ultra lands as a suffix, Apple is placing this above Pro: not “one more telephoto tier,” but a new-form flagship. Fold is plainer, and easier to set next to Samsung’s Z Fold and Huawei’s book-style phones. The keynote may pick one of those, or rename it on the spot. This piece uses Ultra only to match mainstream reporting. It does not mean the name is settled.
Display: inner, cover, and 4:3
On form, almost every dummy and supply-chain note points to a book-style inward fold, not a flip. Closed, it reads as a short, thick “passport phone.” Open, it is closer to a small iPad.

- Cover display: about 5.3–5.5 inches, for calls, replies, and a glance at the lock screen

4:3 is good news for cover-display apps, and homework: splash screens, split views, and toolbars can no longer assume “always a skinny portrait phone.” That will move your schedule this week more than guessing pixel density.
Crease: from “invisible” back to “as shallow as possible”
The crease is the public-argument core of this phone. Early talking points were maximal: liquid-metal hinge, ultra-thin glass, structural-glass midframe, and optical adhesive, aiming for invisible at the factory and still gone after years of use. Tom’s Guide also wrote a target crease depth under 0.15mm and a crease angle under 2.5mm.
The version closer to the event is more honest. MacRumors’ September 3 roundup is blunt: the crease will be kept as small as possible, but Apple has not found a way to make it magically disappear. That sounds like engineering. A book-style phone has to bend. Optics can fool most viewing angles. They cannot fool raking light, or a fingernail dragged across the seam.

Leave room for tax and FX in your head. In mainland China, Hong Kong, Japan, and Europe, street price still depends on VAT, carrier deals, and first-wave allocation. The sturdier decision is not “wait for the local-currency number.” It is: are you buying a second daily phone, or a 4:3 work surface you can carry?
18 Pro’s own price band is in the September 5 pre-event roundup. Buying both at once will look ugly on the invoice. For most teams the saner kit is one 18 Pro device plus one foldable sample or rental, with compiles on a Cloud Mac.
Launch timing and supply
This is where “announce” and “on sale” get welded together. Apple can show the phone tomorrow and ship at volume in October—foldable panel yield and hinge yield do not move on slab-phone time.

For Vuncloud readers, this phone is not just “another expensive iPhone.” iOS 27 already writes resizable windows, sidebars, and side-by-side apps into the system story. The foldable is those APIs moving from iPad experience back into a pocket.
- Two root layouts: cover portrait for short tasks; inner 4:3 for long ones. Splash, paywall, and camera shutter zones all need both passes
- Do not hard-code column widths: NavigationSplitView / adaptive columns survive fold and unfold better than a locked 375pt
