How to use a US Apple ID: from App Store downloads to overseas subscriptions

iPhone and the App Store—using a US Apple ID for downloads and overseas subscriptions — Vuncloud
Three lines first
  • A US Apple ID controls the App Store / Media & Purchases slot, not your iCloud. Photos and contacts stay on the main account
  • To download: sign the US account into Media & Purchases, then open the App Store. Free apps install directly; paid apps and subscriptions need a US balance or a payment method Apple actually lists
  • Overseas services split in two: in-app subscriptions billed by Apple follow this Apple ID; services that charge on their own site do not unlock because the store region changed

Once the account exists, the stuck point is usage: how downloads work, which ID a subscription bills, and whether a home-region iCloud moves. This piece is only about using the ID. Creation, verification, and two-factor are in the US Apple ID registration and payment guide. Steps follow Apple’s iPhone Settings and signing in with a different Apple ID for media purchases.

Two sign-in slots

One iPhone can hold two Apple IDs with different jobs:

  • iCloud (your name at the top of Settings): photos, contacts, Keychain, Find My, iCloud storage. Leave the everyday account here
  • Media & Purchases: App Store, Apple Music, Books, and in-app purchases. To get US apps, put the US Apple ID on this row only

Path: Settings → your name → Media & Purchases → sign out, then sign in with the US account. Do not sign out of iCloud just to download an app. iCloud sign-out touches photos and backup; the store does not need that.

On a Mac, the App Store account under the App Store menu can differ from the Apple ID in System Settings → iCloud.

Download apps from the US store

After Media & Purchases is the US account, open the App Store and check the avatar. Search results should be the United States store. For a free app, tap Get and confirm with that account’s password or Face ID.

  • Updates for that app also come from the same US Apple ID. After you switch the store back, those apps often stop updating
  • Some apps also check the account you create inside the app, language, or network. A successful store download does not mean the service works on your network
  • TestFlight invites and the shipping app are separate. Review builds can stay on a dedicated Mac signed into the matching Apple ID, away from the phone’s main iCloud account

Paid downloads: balance and payment methods

The US store does not take a home-region wallet or a home-region card as if it were a US billing method. Only methods listed on the account count:

  • United States App Store & iTunes gift cards: redeeming one adds balance to that US Apple ID. Enough balance covers paid apps and many in-app subscriptions. The card’s region must be the United States
  • Payment methods Apple shows for this account: Media & Purchases → View Account → Manage Payments. If a card is not listed, do not assume it can be added

Balance and a card can both exist: Apple usually spends balance first. Purchase sharing in Family Sharing follows the organizer’s setup—do not assume a home-region family automatically shares a US subscription.

How overseas subscriptions bill

Billed by Apple

If the app asks you to confirm with Face ID, password, or a second factor, the charge sits on the Apple ID currently in Media & Purchases. Cancel in the same account: Settings → Media & Purchases → View Account → Subscriptions. Cancel active items before you change region or Apple ID, or billing continues on the old account.

Billed by the service

Some services only distribute the client on the US store and charge membership on their own site. The US Apple ID then only answers “where the client downloads and how it updates.” Membership region and whether you can register follow that service’s terms, not the App Store country.

Check the sheet before you pay

If the confirmation is Apple’s, the item appears under Subscriptions for that Apple ID. If the confirmation is the service’s website, it will not appear there, and you cancel on the service’s site.

Updates, cancellation, region changes

If you will keep downloading from the US store, leave Media & Purchases on the United States. That is steadier than flipping the country. Apple’s note on changing your Apple ID country or region says you generally spend the balance, cancel subscriptions, and finish pre-orders and rentals first. A dedicated US account means you do not convert the main home-region Apple ID.

When the Mac App Store and the iPhone use the same US Apple ID, purchases can download on both, still subject to whether the app supports both devices and whether the subscription includes the Mac.

What not to do

  • Do not sign someone else’s Apple ID into your iCloud. Purchases can be split; iCloud should not be shared, or photos and Find My land in the other account
  • Do not keep changing IP and then the country so the phone “looks American.” Payment eligibility follows the account and the methods Apple lists, not a VPN
  • Do not force a region change while balance remains or subscriptions are still active
  • Do not send a US gift-card code to strangers, or type the Apple ID password into a random page. Redeem only in the official account page or the App Store

FAQ

Do I sign out of home-region iCloud to install a US app?

No. Switch only Media & Purchases. iCloud stays on the main account, so photos and contacts do not move to the US account because the App Store did.

Can I buy paid apps without a US credit card?

Redeem a United States gift card onto this Apple ID. If the balance covers the price, the purchase goes through. Any other method must appear in Apple’s list on the account.

Does a subscription follow the phone or the Apple ID?

It follows the Apple ID that started it. A new phone keeps the subscription if Media & Purchases still uses that ID. Sign out or switch IDs, and this phone no longer updates as that subscriber.

Does a US Apple ID open every overseas membership?

No. It sets the App Store country and covers purchases Apple bills. Memberships billed by the service still need that service’s region and payment rules.

Close

Day-to-day use is one line: leave iCloud on the main account, put the US Apple ID in Media & Purchases, pay with US balance or a method the account actually offers, and return to that same ID for updates and cancellation. If a membership is not sold by Apple, another country change will not grant it.
