- Intelligent UI is how regular Chat answers. GPT-6 puts text, graphics, charts, tappable buttons, forms, and small tools in the same reply. Plain text is still allowed.
- Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise start on October 7, 2026 with GPT-6 Sol. Free and Go start on October 8 with GPT-6 Luna. If your account is still queued, the interface will not show up.
- Public demos include a tappable bicycle diagram, lift diagrams for a wing, mahjong tiles, a Sunday-roast plan, savings calculators, a bill splitter, and a small in-chat game. The prompts below are not a fixed menu.
- Android Authority reports that this release changes regular Chat only. Work and Codex are unchanged. Public materials also do not describe it as a launched API.
What Intelligent UI is
OpenAI’s October 7 post on the developer community describes Intelligent UI as faster, interactive answers: everyday questions get more visual, harder topics are easier to follow, and a tool for the task shows up in the conversation. The product page is GPT-6 and Intelligent UI for everyone.
GPT-6 decides how text, visuals, and controls fit the question. A comparison can sit side by side. An explanation can be a tappable diagram. When a sentence is enough, the reply can stay text. TechCrunch quotes product manager Aarush Selvan: ChatGPT has mostly been a text interface, but for a recipe, a trip, or learning something, the most useful answer is often more than text.
The layout is not a template prepared in advance. The announcement says a library of native components and a compiler show the interface while the model is still generating it. GPT-6 can also start answering while it keeps thinking. Read the speed number on its own: for questions that need web search, GPT-6 Instant starts answering 44% sooner on average than GPT-5.6 Instant. That is time-to-first-answer, not time-to-finish, and it is not an accuracy claim for Sol or Luna.
Who gets which model
The community announcement’s rollout table is below. Coverage calls Sol the mid-range model and Luna the more efficient one. Free and Go still get Intelligent UI. They get a different model, one day later.
| ChatGPT plan | Rollout begins | Model in regular Chat |
|---|---|---|
| Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise | October 7, 2026 | GPT-6 Sol |
| Free, Go | October 8, 2026 | GPT-6 Luna |
A global rollout does not mean the interface is on your account the moment you open the app. While you are still queued, replies stay text. If the picker does not show Sol or Luna yet, a different prompt will not create the interface.
How to use it
Start in regular Chat
Open a regular ChatGPT conversation. Android Authority says this change lands in regular Chat. Work and Codex are not part of this release. Looking for an “Intelligent UI” switch on those surfaces will not match the announcement.
Then check that the model is already GPT-6 Sol or GPT-6 Luna. Paid plans start October 7. Free and Go start October 8. If the date has passed and the model is still missing, the account is still in the staggered queue.
Turn the demos into prompts
There is no official prompt list. The questions below restate the public demos so you can name the interface you want. The layout can differ each time. The announcement says the format depends on the question.
| What you want | You can ask | What the public demos showed |
|---|---|---|
| See a structure | Break down a seven-speed bicycle. Use a tappable diagram for the frame, wheels, drivetrain, brakes, and cockpit. | A parts diagram with buttons (The Verge, Android Authority) |
| Change a physical idea | Explain how an airplane wing generates lift, and give me diagrams I can inspect by part. | A set of lift diagrams (TechCrunch, Aarush Selvan) |
| See a set of numbers | Turn these six months of spending into an interactive chart I can switch between category and month. | Interactive charts and editable graphs (TechCrunch) |
| Learn a classification | Teach me mahjong tiles with scrollable categories. | Tiles grouped by type (The Verge) |
| Cook from a plan | Make a Sunday-roast plan: plus and minus for guests, shopping quantities that follow, a button to copy the list, and a checklist I can tick. | A mini-app style reply (Android Authority) |
| Run the numbers | Build a retirement-savings calculator. Let me edit the monthly contribution, the number of years, and an assumed return. | An in-chat calculator (The Verge, TechCrunch) |
| Split a bill | Build a bill splitter. Let me change the number of people and what each person already paid. | A bill splitter (community post, The Verge) |
| Play in place | Build a playable retro game in this conversation. | An in-chat game (The Verge) |
Change the inputs in the reply
Once the interface is there, use its buttons, steppers, and fields. The announcement calls this adjusting the answer: the controls adapt the reply to your task. In the roast demo, the guest count changes the shopping quantities. In a savings calculator, the monthly amount or the years should move the result.
If a control is missing, name the input you want to edit, for example “add plus and minus for guests” or “make the return an editable field.” That still does not turn the reply into a published app.
Charts and diagrams
A chart fits a relationship among numbers. A diagram fits the parts of a thing. The bicycle demo is the second kind: frame, wheels, drivetrain, brakes, and cockpit each get a button, and the button opens that part. The wing demo is an explanation: how lift works, then the parts you can inspect.
When you want a chart, say what the data is and how you want to switch views. “Draw a chart” lets the model pick the layout. If you want bars, a line, or a toggle between category and month, put that in the same sentence. TechCrunch describes interactive charts and editable graphs, not a fixed chart menu.
A hiking map is a third case. TechCrunch mentions a map for a multi-day hike. Days, distance per day, and the markers you care about produce a more editable layout than “make a map.”
Calculators, bill splitters, and small tools
The community announcement names three things you can use inside the conversation: a game, a calculator, or a bill splitter. The Verge specifies a retirement-savings calculator and a retro game. TechCrunch also mentions a personal savings calculator. These tools live in the reply, for that conversation.
Name the fields you need to edit. A savings calculator should at least mention the monthly contribution, the years, and whether you want an assumed return. A bill splitter should mention the headcount, the total, and whether you are splitting evenly or settling what each person already paid. If you leave the fields out, the model will invent a reasonable set of controls. That set may not be the one you wanted.
The Sunday roast is a small tool, not a single picture: food images, guest steppers, shopping quantities, a copy button for the list, and a cooking checklist. If you want a plan whose quantities follow the guest count, put those pieces in one message.
Games work the same way. “Make a game” is too wide. “Build a playable retro game in this conversation” is closer to the demo The Verge describes. The mahjong example is a teaching layout of tile categories, not a full match.
Plain text, and fewer visuals
The announcement says ChatGPT can stay with text when text is the useful answer. You can also start the question with “text only, no chart.” If a layout is already on screen and you only want steps, say “fewer visuals, written steps.”
TechCrunch adds that you can dial the visuals back the way you adjust ChatGPT’s personality. Neither the announcement nor the write-ups publish a fixed settings path. Use the label you see in the client. Do not treat a menu path from a second-hand tutorial as the October 7 procedure.
Limits: Work, Codex, and checking numbers
Three things not to stretch past the sources:
- Surface. Android Authority reports that this release changes regular Chat only. Work and Codex stay as they were. Coding agents and long-running tasks still use their existing entry points.
- API. Public materials do not say Intelligent UI has launched as an API feature. An in-chat calculator is not an endpoint you can call, and it is not an exported front-end project.
- Numbers. A generated formula or chart can be wrong. Check money, doses, routes, and any figure you would act on. The Verge also relays that OpenAI says GPT-6 showed stronger resistance to attempts to bypass its safety training. That is a product note, not a bypass guide.
An interface you try in chat will not sign an iOS build or keep a compile awake. Turning the same calculator into an app still means Xcode or Flutter on macOS. That step is separate from the interface inside ChatGPT.
Where this comes from
- OpenAI developer-community announcement: scope, the component library and compiler, the 44% time-to-start figure, and the October 7 / 8 plan table.
- OpenAI product page: the GPT-6 and Intelligent UI entry point.
- TechCrunch: the wing demo, editable graphs, the hiking map, the savings calculator, and dialing visuals back.
- The Verge: the seven-speed bicycle, mahjong, the retirement calculator, the retro game, and the bill splitter.
- Android Authority: the bicycle part buttons, the Sunday-roast plan, and Work / Codex staying out of this release.
FAQ
What is GPT-6 Intelligent UI?
It is a way of answering inside regular ChatGPT. GPT-6 combines text, graphics, charts, tappable buttons, forms, and interactive tools in one reply. A simple question can still come back as plain text.
When can free users get it, and which model?
Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise start on October 7, 2026 with GPT-6 Sol. Free and Go start on October 8 with GPT-6 Luna. The rollout is global and staggered. If your account is still in the queue, the interface will not appear.
How do I get ChatGPT to build a chart or a calculator?
In regular Chat, name the format in plain language: an interactive chart, a savings calculator with editable numbers, a bill splitter, or a tappable diagram. After it appears, change the inputs with the controls in the reply. There is no fixed menu.
What if there are too many visuals?
Ask for fewer visuals and for written steps. TechCrunch reports you can also dial visuals back the way you adjust ChatGPT’s personality. The announcement does not publish a fixed settings path. Use the control you see in your client.
Does this ship in Work, Codex, or the API?
Android Authority reports that this release changes regular Chat only. Work and Codex are not part of it. Public materials also do not describe Intelligent UI as a launched API feature. An in-chat tool is not an exportable app.
What does the 44% figure mean?
The OpenAI developer-community announcement says GPT-6 Instant starts answering web-search questions 44% sooner on average than GPT-5.6 Instant. That measures time to begin answering, not time to finish, and it is not an accuracy claim for Sol or Luna.
Closing
Three sentences cover it. Intelligent UI is text, charts, and interactive tools assembled inside regular Chat for the question you asked. Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise get GPT-6 Sol from October 7; Free and Go get GPT-6 Luna from October 8. Check the numbers in a calculator yourself, and do not look for this release in Work, Codex, or the API.
If the picker does not show the model yet, wait for the rollout. Once it does, name the interface with the prompts above, then change the inputs in the reply.
Turning the in-chat calculator into an app still happens on a Mac
The interface inside ChatGPT lives in that conversation. Xcode or Flutter builds, signing, and a long compile belong on a Cloud Mac that does not sleep. The laptop reviews the result.
