"Can my iPhone 15 run Apple Intelligence?" "Does an M1 Mac mini qualify?" "Is Siri AI only on iPhone 17 Pro?"
At WWDC 2026, Apple unveiled the next generation of Apple Intelligence and an all-new Siri AI—and device requirements are trending again. This guide lays out the full July 2026 official compatibility list, hardware rules, advanced-tier differences, and unsupported models in one place. Check it before you buy, upgrade, or provision dev machines for your team.
Hardware requirements: what Apple actually checks
Apple Intelligence is not a cloud-only feature—much of the inference runs on the on-device Neural Engine. Apple's hard requirements boil down to three rules:
| Dimension | Minimum | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Chip architecture | Apple silicon (A-series / M-series) | Intel Macs and iPhones with A16 or older are out |
| Unified memory | ≥ 8 GB | iPhone 15 Pro was the first A-series model with 8GB—the main reason standard iPhone 15 models are excluded |
| Local storage | ≥ 7 GB free space | For downloading on-device AI models (Apple Watch excluded) |
By category, Apple's wording in its official support documentation and the WWDC 2026 press release is as follows:
- iPhone: iPhone 15 Pro / 15 Pro Max, or all iPhone 16 and newer models
- iPad: iPad mini (A17 Pro), or iPad Air / iPad Pro with M1 and newer
- Mac: any Apple silicon Mac (including the 2026 MacBook Neo with A18 Pro)
- Apple Vision Pro: all models supported
- Apple Watch: Series 9 and newer, Ultra 2 and newer, SE 3—must be paired with a nearby iPhone that has Apple Intelligence enabled
Quick check
For iPhone, confirm 15 Pro or newer, or 16 and up; for iPad, M1+ or mini with A17 Pro; for Mac, Apple silicon. Meet all three and you're hardware-ready.

The most capable on-device Siri AI models are reserved for 12GB devices.
Full iPad support list
iPad rules are simpler than iPhone: all iPad Air and iPad Pro models with M1 or newer, plus one exception—the iPad mini (A17 Pro).
| Model | Chip | Typical memory | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPad Pro 11" (3rd gen and later) | M1 / M4 / M5 | 8–16 GB | 2021 M1 models qualify from day one |
| iPad Pro 12.9" / 13" (5th gen and later) | M1 / M2 / M4 / M5 | 8–16 GB | All large-screen Pro models are M-series |
| iPad Air (5th gen and later) | M1 / M2 / M3 / M4 | 8–16 GB | 2022 M1 Air is the entry-level supported model |
| iPad mini (7th gen) | A17 Pro | 8 GB | Only non-M-series iPad that qualifies |
Unsupported iPads include: 10th-generation iPad (A14, 4GB), earlier iPad / iPad Air / iPad Pro models, and any Wi-Fi or cellular variant that does not meet the chip thresholds above.
Full Mac support list
Mac has the loosest bar of the three categories: every Apple silicon Mac is supported, from the 2020 M1 MacBook Air to the 2026 M5 Mac Studio—no exceptions. Apple also added the A18 Pro-powered MacBook Neo in 2026, which is on the official list.
By product line

Intel Mac users
No matter how much RAM or how strong the AMD discrete GPU, Intel Macs do not support Apple Intelligence. If you're still on a 2019 Intel MacBook Pro for iOS development, moving to Apple silicon is the only path—or consider renting a Cloud Mac as a bridge.
Vision Pro & Apple Watch
Apple Vision Pro: all models support Apple Intelligence. visionOS 26.1 adds Writing Tools, Image Playground, Mail summaries, natural-language photo search, and more; the WWDC 2026 next-gen update will expand further with visionOS 27.
Apple Watch: it does not run the full on-device model locally. Instead, it relays some AI capabilities through a paired iPhone. The WWDC 2026 official list:
- Apple Watch Series 9 and newer (including Series 10, Series 11)
- Apple Watch Ultra 2 and newer
- Apple Watch SE 3
Requirement: the watch must be paired with a compatible iPhone nearby that has Apple Intelligence turned on. Notification summaries, live Message translation, Workout Buddy, and similar features use this link.
Siri AI advanced tier: 12GB memory models
The Siri AI announced at WWDC 2026—on-screen content understanding, cross-app personal context search, a standalone Siri app, and more—demands more compute. Apple splits devices into two tiers:
| Tier | Memory requirement | Typical models | Capability difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base tier | 8 GB | iPhone 15 Pro–16 lineup, M1–M2 Mac, most iPads | Current Apple Intelligence features + partial Siri AI capabilities |
| Advanced tier | 12 GB+ | iPhone Air / 17 Pro series; M4+ iPad with 12GB+; M3+ Mac with 12GB+; Vision Pro | Strongest on-device Siri AI models, full screen understanding & deep cross-app context |
Practical advice: if you're buying an iPhone mainly for next-gen Siri AI, iPhone 17 Pro / Pro Max or iPhone Air are the "full power" picks. For Writing Tools, Image Playground, and notification summaries alone, iPhone 16 or 15 Pro is enough. On Mac, an M4 with 16GB or 24GB Mac mini / MacBook Pro is the sweet spot for developers balancing Xcode and AI—the Cloud Mac spec we keep recommending in Dev Notes.
Devices that definitely do not qualify
These devices cannot use Apple Intelligence, no matter how far you update the OS:
| Category | Representative unsupported models | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone | iPhone 15 / 15 Plus, iPhone 14 and older, iPhone SE 3 | A16 or older chip; memory < 8GB |
| iPad | 10th-gen iPad, earlier iPad / Air / Pro | Not M1+ and not A17 Pro mini |
| Mac | All Intel Macs (2019 and earlier mainstream models) | No Apple Neural Engine on-device architecture |
| Apple Watch | Series 8 and older, Ultra 1, SE 2 | No full AI relay capability |
| Apple TV | All models | Not on the compatibility list |
Apple executives have said that technically some features could run on older iPhones, but they would not be fast enough for a good experience—so Apple did not enable them. This is a hardware ceiling, not something a system update can fix.
How to enable & system requirements
Once hardware qualifies, you still need the right software and settings:
- OS version: current public releases need iOS / iPadOS 18.1+, macOS Sequoia 15.1+, visionOS 2.4+. The next generation announced at WWDC 2026 (iOS 27 / macOS 27, etc.) ships this fall, when Siri AI reaches users broadly.
- Enable path: Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri → turn on Apple Intelligence.
- Model download: first enable downloads about 7 GB of on-device models; timing depends on your network. Use Wi-Fi and keep the device plugged in.
- Language alignment: device language and Siri language must be the same supported language (e.g., English + English Siri). Changing Siri language may trigger a model re-download.
Developers testing Siri AI on real hardware need the Apple Developer Program and iOS 27 / macOS 27 developer betas. Public betas usually open the following month via the Apple Beta Software Program.
Region & language limits
Qualifying hardware does not mean global availability. As of July 2026, also note:
- Mainland China: Apple Intelligence and Siri AI are not yet available; Apple is pursuing regulatory approval. China-market devices must wait for an official launch even when hardware supports it.
- European Union: most Apple Intelligence features opened with iOS 18.4+; however, WWDC 2026 said Siri AI will not initially ship on iPhone / iPad / watchOS in the EU. Mac and Vision Pro work when set to a supported language.
- Supported languages (iOS 26.1+): English, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, Vietnamese, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese, Korean. Siri AI beta launches primarily in English, with more languages rolling out quickly.
Users in Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan can set Siri to Traditional Chinese or English; users in India can choose English (India). Capabilities vary by language—for example, live translation and voicemail summaries each have their own supported-language lists. See Apple's official support page for details.
Developers: testing Apple Intelligence on Mac
If you build apps and need to verify Writing Tools integration, Apple Intelligence models in Shortcuts, or next-gen Siri AI App Intents—an Apple silicon Mac is non-negotiable. Common paths:
- Local M4 Mac mini: best value for long-term development; see our M4 mini vs MacBook Pro buying guide
- Cloud Mac: no upfront hardware spend—rent an M4 node monthly for Xcode + iOS 27 beta, ideal for Windows teams or short validation cycles; see macOS 27 developer changes explained
- Parallel CI: run UI tests and Apple Intelligence integration tests on a cloud Mac in parallel so your primary machine stays free
Minimum dev setup: M1 or newer, 16GB RAM, 256GB+ storage (7GB models + Xcode + Simulator eat space fast). For the full Siri AI advanced experience, prioritize M4 + 24GB.
